What is Karisma?
Karisma is a Radiology Information System built for radiology and nuclear medicine practices across Australia and New Zealand. It manages the full patient journey from online booking and referral intake through to protocolling, reporting, results distribution and billing, all within a single platform. Karisma has the ability to scale from single-site private practices through to complex multi-site networks and public hospital radiology departments.
What does Karisma cover across the radiology workflow?
Karisma manages the full patient journey across five stages of the radiology workflow: patient intake and booking, registration and examination preparation, imaging and protocolling, reporting and authorisation, and billing and results distribution. Each stage is supported by dedicated modules including online bookings, eReferrals, eForms, PACS integration, an approvals module, automated report distribution, Medicare and DVA billing, business analytics and Kestral Pay. Practices configure the platform to match their operational requirements.
How does Karisma handle Medicare and DVA billing?
Karisma includes a built-in rules engine covering Medicare, DVA, AMA, ACC/HT and MBS billing requirements for Australian radiology practices. Karisma links billing to the provided service by mapping configured service types to the rebate library, allowing staff to select services by description rather than item number and allows simplified billing via ECLIPSE for Inpatient Medical Claims. The result is a billing workflow that reduces manual item selection and improves revenue accuracy across all examination types.
Which PACS systems does Karisma integrate with?
Karisma integrates with all leading PACS providers used in Australian and New Zealand radiology. Desktop Integration with passthrough authentication allows radiologists to context launch imaging studies in the PACS directly from Karisma. Karisma also supports HL7 connectivity and FHIR eRequesting, making it compatible with the full range of clinical systems and communication standards used in modern diagnostic practice.
Can Karisma scale across multiple sites?
Karisma scales from single-site private practices to multi-site networks and full local health districts across Australia and New Zealand. Billing rules, reporting pools, protocol visibility and booking configurations are all manageable at the worksite level, so each site operates with the settings that reflect its own workflow while the broader network retains central visibility and reporting. Karisma has been deployed in some of the highest examination volume environments in Australian radiology.
How is Karisma hosted?
Karisma can be hosted on-premise, at an offsite data centre or via cloud technology. Kestral works with each practice to identify the hosting arrangement that best fits its infrastructure, security requirements and operational environment. All three options are supported with the same standard of technical access and 24/7 support.
What does Karisma implementation involve?
Karisma implementation is managed directly by Kestral’s professional services team, covering system and integration configuration and setup, project management, user training and on site go-live support. Kestral quotes are fully inclusive of scope from the start, so there are no surprises when the project is underway. Some RIS vendors quote low upfront and add costs as requirements emerge during implementation. Kestral’s approach is to scope the full project before quoting, so the system delivered at go-live matches exactly what was agreed and budgeted for at the outset.
